This was ad-libbed by the voice actor, Craig Ferguson and they chose to keep it in because they loved it. Kids won’t get it but adults will be thinking “did he just imply what I think he implied?”

And later the director confirmed it.

DeBlois revealed that, the reason Gobber never got married, is because he is homosexual. This makes him the first homosexual character of the franchise, and even DreamWorks itself.

This is the worst representation I’ve ever seen when will we actually get queer characters without having to deduce it from like 0.3 seconds of screen time and a vague hint

the worst? are we forgetting..

You know what? You know fucking what?

This is the BEST I’ve ever seen.

Because gay people, at least all the gay people I know, do not go around announcing their gayness like they’ve got a gay form of Tourettes.

If you can easily guess WHY he never married, then frankly it speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

Some people will be offended about ANYTHING they possibly can…

I didn’t get this straightaway but this was very clever when I found out what it meant. It was good representation because it showed that even the average character can have a sexuality that doesn’t have to be straight. That their existence is constantly acknowledged is beautiful.

You know what REALLY pisses me off?

We shout homo normative statements, crying that ‘we’re the same as you, treat us the exact same way. Our sexuality doesn’t define us’. Then, the second someone makes a canonically gay character who acts the same as a homosexual person and doesn’t flaunt stereotypical gay traits (something which not all homosexuals do), there is uproar. If they played to the stereotypical gay traits, people would still be angry at them for it.

It leaves anyone creating gay characters in too difficult positions. Either make canonically gay people who (surprise surprise) act in similar ways to heterosexual people and who don’t conform to gay stereotypes, or conform to gay stereotypes and have people angry at you for not having them act like a regular heterosexual person. It’s lose lose for them, and that attitude is poisonous.
